About this dream book

History of the dream book

In the first half of the 19th century dream books were among the most widespread books in the Russian Empire: they were published and reissued with small changes, often under the title “snotolkovatel” (“dream interpreter”) and the year of publication. The title of this collection points to one such edition of 1829.

The text on the site corresponds to the old book only in part. Many entries are written on the model of Miller — with mentions of farmers, trade and “a young woman” — that is, they were added later, when the collection was reissued in the 1990s.

In the first half of the 19th century readers knew such books well: writers mentioned them, and editions titled “dream interpreter” were handed down in families.

What the interpretations are like

The old entries can be recognised by their language: “foretells profit and success in an undertaking”, “signifies disorder of one’s fortune”. The newer ones are lengthy, with variants for different readers; almost every fourth has a separate variant for a woman. The collection is large, and next to short omens there are very long entries.

Compare it with Miller and Martyn Zadeka — this shows which parts of the collection are old and which are late.
