Loff’s Dream Book

Loff’s Dream Book is attributed to David Loff, an author who saw a dream above all as a reflection of a person’s own experience. So instead of ready-made omens it asks the reader many questions: what did you feel in the dream, who was there, how is the image connected with your life right now? It has fewer symbols than the classic collections, but its interpretations are more detailed and help you understand yourself rather than guess the future.

About this dream book

History of the dream book

The Loff dream book is attributed to David Loff; it appeared in Russian-language editions in the 1990s as a translation of an English book about dreams. Available sources give no reliable information about the author — dates of life, profession, the original title of the book — so the name is best taken as the label of the edition.

The book belongs to the popular psychology of the second half of the 20th century: a dream is seen as a reflection of a person’s experience, not as a prediction. This approach was common at the time in American books for the general reader. Because of the double translation — from English into Russian and then back into English — some wording sounds unusual, but the content of the entries is preserved.

What the interpretations are like

The entries are among the longest on the site: more than a thousand characters on average. Almost every second one asks the reader questions: what you felt, who was nearby, what the image is connected with in your life. Ready-made omens (“means money”, “means a quarrel”) are almost absent.

The dream book is useful when you want not to guess the future but to understand what the dream says about your state of mind. Look for short omens on the same image in the folk dream books.
