Freud’s Dream Book

Freud’s Dream Book is a collection of interpretations based on the ideas of Sigmund Freud, the Austrian physician who founded psychoanalysis. Freud himself never wrote a dream dictionary: in “The Interpretation of Dreams” (1899) he showed how a dream expresses hidden wishes and feelings, and insisted that a symbol can only be understood together with the dreamer’s personal associations. Popular dream books “after Freud” focus on relationships, the body and desire, so they are best read as one possible version.

About this dream book

History of the dream book

Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. His book “The Interpretation of Dreams” came out at the end of 1899 (dated 1900 on the title page) and became the basis of the psychoanalytic approach to dreams: for Freud, a dream is the disguised fulfilment of a wish, and its images are masked thoughts a person does not want to admit while awake.

Freud did not compile a dictionary of symbols and warned against mechanical interpretation: he looked for the meaning of an image in the person’s own free associations. “Freud’s dream books” appeared much later as popular editions that reduce his ideas to ready-made meanings, mostly related to sexuality. This is the version presented on the site.

What the interpretations are like

The interpretations are detailed, often several paragraphs long, and almost always distinguish between a man and a woman. The main topics are desire, relations with a partner, bodily sensations and self-doubt; there are hardly any predictions about money or business.

Read these interpretations as one possible version, not as the opinion of Freud himself: real psychoanalysis does not give an image the same meaning for everyone.
