About this dream book

History of the dream book

Among the Slavs, the belief that dreams foretell the future was part of everyday life: dreams were discussed in the family, and their meanings were passed on as omens — just like omens about the weather or the harvest. Ethnographers and compilers of popular editions began recording these interpretations in the 19th century.

The “Slavic Dream Book” in its modern form is a collection of such omens without a single author. It is not tied to a particular people: it contains images from Russian, Ukrainian and South Slavic traditions, and some entries even mention quite urban things — a boulevard, a guardhouse.

What the interpretations are like

The entries are the shortest on the site: a few words on average. The explanation is built as an omen “image — event”: thirst means vexation, quenching it means wealth. There are almost no distinctions by the reader’s sex.

The dream book is handy for learning the folk meaning of an image; if you need an explanation of why you dream of exactly this, look at the other dream books on the dream page.
