Solomon’s Dream Book

Solomon's Dream Book is a collection of very short omens that tradition links to the name of the biblical King Solomon, famous for his wisdom. Solomon himself wrote no dream book. The interpretations are one or two words: a bank — loss, running — loss, a broom — a change for the better in business. The compiler is unknown; the collection is close to old folk dream books. More than three hundred images.

About this dream book

History of the dream book

King Solomon, son of David, became a symbol of wisdom in the biblical and later tradition, and many books were signed with his name — from magical treatises to collections of omens. “Solomon’s Dream Book” belongs to this tradition: the name lends the collection weight, but it has nothing to do with the biblical king.

The text is a list of folk omens, many of which coincide with the dream books of Hasse and Simon the Canaanite. Such lists circulated in cheap 19th-century editions and returned in reprints of the 1990s.

Solomon’s name was associated with the interpretation of signs in the Christian, Jewish and Islamic traditions alike: he was regarded as the keeper of secret knowledge. That is why collections of omens were readily signed with his name.

What the interpretations are like

The interpretations are the shortest: a few words on average. Variants are separated by semicolons, without explanations. Many meanings concern money, illness and a change of residence. There are no distinctions for women and men, and no explanations or advice either.

The dream book is handy for a quick answer; look for details in more thorough collections.
